Help with Internet
Internet Troubleshooting
Step 1: Check Your Equipment
-
Make sure that your router (wireless gateway) is powered on.
-
Confirm that the Wi-Fi lights (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) are on and flashing.
- These flashing lights indicate data traffic across the network connection.
- If you are using a hardwired connection, the LAN port with the Ethernet cable should light up if the device receiving Internet is powered on.
-
Confirm that the Wi-Fi lights (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) are on and flashing.
Step 2: Test Other Devices
-
Confirm that another device is working on the network. If so:
- Reboot the device that is having trouble connecting.
- Confirm that it is connected to your FOCUS Broadband network.
- Try switching between a wired and wireless connection, if needed.
- These steps can help identify the type of connection that is giving you trouble.
Step 3: Restart Your Equipment
-
Restarting equipment can solve many common connection issues involving no Internet.
-
To reboot your router:
- Unplug the power cord.
- Wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Allow several minutes for it to reconnect fully.
-
To reboot your router:
- After the router restarts, reboot the device that was having connection issues. This should reset the connection information on that device, allowing it to establish a new connection.
If you require further assistance, experience any issues, or have questions, please contact Technical Support at 833-663-1241.
Speed Test
What to Expect
As your Internet service provider, FOCUS Broadband is committed to giving you the highest-capacity access available, whether through cable modem or fiber-optic technology. Each speed tier we advertise is listed as the maximum attainable download speed delivered through a wired connection.
Any Internet-capable device that is not physically connected to your router through an Ethernet cable is considered a wireless device and must access the Internet through Wi-Fi.
A speed test performed over a wireless network will not give you a valid test result due to several factors, many of which are related to the environment of your business. Wireless network performance is highly dependent on how your business is constructed, the placement of your router, and the types and number of devices connected to your network.
How to Prepare for Your Speed Test
A speed test is an application that attempts to determine your maximum possible speed at the time of testing. The best way to get the most accurate test result is to test a computer that is physically connected to your router through an Ethernet cable and power off all other wired and wireless devices that are connected to your network. Your computer’s performance can also influence speed test results. Before performing a speed test, close out all other programs and any other Internet activities to get the best result.
If you have any questions or concerns about the performance of your Internet speed, contact our support center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-866-951-4357.
Help with Wi-Fi
What is the range of my business Wi-Fi?
Your business Wi-Fi includes both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz connectivity. The 2.4 GHz band generally provides broader coverage and performs better through walls and other obstacles, while the 5 GHz band delivers faster speeds over shorter distances.
Wi-Fi coverage can vary depending on the size and layout of your business, building materials, equipment placement, and the number of connected devices. If your business needs expanded coverage, stronger connectivity in hard-to-reach areas, or support across multiple floors or buildings, additional Wi-Fi solutions may be available. Contact FOCUS Broadband to discuss the best setup for your business.
Wi-Fi FAQs
I did a speed test and am not getting the full speed I am supposed to be getting. Why is that?
There could be plenty of reasons why a speed test may look a little slow. The first depends on whether the device you are using for the speed test is wired or wireless. Devices that connect to the internet via a wired connection are going to give the best results because they are not impacted by the same number of factors as a wireless device and give the best throughput for speed. Wireless devices can be impacted by interference, so speed tests conducted on wireless devices typically yield slower speeds. Some factors that can limit the throughput of speed to wireless devices are: the placement of the router in the business, the size, layout and materials used to build the business, the number of wireless devices connected to the Wi-Fi router, the protocols used in the wireless router and the devices connected to it, the proximity of competing radio signals in your business and even neighboring businesses.
What factors impact the speed I will get using Wi-Fi?
There are numerous factors that can impact your Wi-Fi signal. These include physical obstructions like walls, appliances, etc. You always want the clearest path possible for your Wi-Fi signal. A Wi-Fi signal is similar to a light wave or sound wave in that it goes farther if there is nothing there to stop it. Placement of your router also impacts your speed. The closer the devices are to your router, the better they will work. Wireless frequency interference from other devices using radio frequencies will slow your connection. Just like congestion on a highway, the presence of numerous wireless signals will slow everything down. Construction properties of your business can be a factor in your speed. The thicker the walls, the less success wireless signals will have penetrating them. And finally, usage. The more devices that are connected to your broadband connection, the more it needs to deliver.

Battery Backup
Battery Backup
Telephone service provided through the cable system using a cable modem or through the fiber-optic network using an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) relies on electricity to work properly. These units are equipped with a battery that provides backup power for a limited time during a power outage.
To help ensure continued access to telephone service during a power outage, we recommend checking your battery regularly. Instructions for testing and replacing backup batteries are provided below.
Cable modem customers may purchase a backup battery from any FOCUS Broadband retail location and perform a self-installation. Backup batteries for fiber ONTs must be replaced by a FOCUS Broadband technician. To schedule a professional battery installation or receive additional information about testing and replacing your backup battery, please call 910-754-4317.
Battery Replacement Instructions for Fiber Optic ONTs
How do I know if the battery on my ONT needs to be replaced, and what should be done to replace it?
- A green indicator light on the battery, as shown in the diagram, indicates that the battery is functioning properly. A flashing red light indicates that the battery is disconnected or no longer functioning properly and needs to be replaced.
Note: ONT batteries must be replaced by a FOCUS Broadband technician.
Please call 910-754-4317 to schedule an appointment to have your ONT battery replaced.
Battery Replacement Instructions for Cable Modems
How do I know if the battery in my modem needs to be replaced?
- Flashing battery indicator lights, as shown in the diagram, indicate that the battery is no longer functioning properly and needs to be replaced.
Cable Modem Battery Replacement
This modem can provide battery backup during a local power outage. The battery backup is not intended to replace AC power. Follow the procedure below to install or replace the backup battery.
-
Press down and pull back on the latch holding the battery door on the bottom of the modem. Pull the door toward you and set it aside in a safe place.
- Caution: Improperly inserting the battery may damage the battery connector inside the modem. Carefully follow the instructions in the next step to avoid damaging the equipment.
-
Hold the battery pack so that the guides on the battery align with the slots inside the modem. Slide the battery into the battery bay in the proper orientation.
- Note: The battery will not insert completely if it is not oriented correctly. The battery should slide into the bay without significant force. Make sure the guides on the battery align with the slots in the battery bay.
-
Push the battery pack into the bay until it is fully seated. If you are removing the battery, place your finger in the battery-opening area and use leverage to dislodge the battery while pulling it straight back.
- Note: The modem will not begin operating until AC power is connected.
-
Replace the battery door. Insert the hinge tabs on the battery door into the receiver slots inside the modem’s battery compartment, opposite the battery opening. Rotate the door toward the unit until the latch snaps securely into place.
Battery Disposal
Cable modems use a lithium-ion battery pack. Please recycle or dispose of the battery responsibly and in accordance with local ordinances.

Toll Fraud
Important Notification for Businesses Using Multiline Telephone Systems
FOCUS Broadband is aware of fraudulent activity that may affect our business customers. If you use a multiline telephone system or PBX with voicemail, you could be susceptible to long-distance call hacking that could cause you to incur thousands of dollars in unauthorized long-distance charges. Please read the following information carefully.
It is important to protect your business by ensuring that employees change their default passwords to unique number combinations that cannot be easily guessed. As a customer with a multiline telephone and voicemail system, you are responsible for protecting your equipment and for any toll charges made on your account.
If you have general questions about protecting your business communications equipment, we recommend contacting your business communications equipment provider. If your business communications equipment was installed by FOCUS Broadband, call (910) 755-1675.
If you believe you have been the target of criminal activity, it is your responsibility to contact local authorities immediately. FOCUS Broadband will cooperate with any criminal investigation.
For more information about protecting your business, review the tips below.
General practices for protecting your multiline telephone system:
- Require employees to change the default password on their voicemail box as soon as it is assigned. This is extremely important.
- Program your voicemail system to require passwords containing at least six characters. Passwords containing eight characters are preferred. The more complex the password, the more difficult it will be to compromise.
- Train employees to use passwords that are not easily guessed. Examples of weak passwords include telephone numbers, extension numbers, and simple combinations such as 1234, 1111, or other repeated numbers.
- When assigning a telephone to a new employee, never use the employee’s extension number as the temporary password. Assign a unique temporary password that will be more difficult to guess.
- Program your voicemail system to require users to change their passwords at least every 90 days.
- Certain features allow long-distance calls to be placed through a voicemail system—particularly through an individual user’s mailbox—from an off-site location. Determine whether your business needs this feature. If it is unnecessary, have it disabled to prevent hackers from placing outbound calls through unsecured voicemail boxes.
- Never leave unassigned voicemail boxes on the system. When an employee leaves your business, remove old messages and delete the employee’s voicemail box immediately.
- Restrict the Voicemail Remote Notification option so that it only contacts approved pagers or mobile phones.
- Consider restricting international dialing or using dialing filters that permit or restrict calls to specific countries.
The security measures listed above are general and may not protect every multiline telephone system. We recommend contacting your equipment-support provider to discuss the specific features and vulnerabilities of your multiline telephone system in greater detail.
Each business should assign a system administrator to manage its multiline telephone system and assist employees with basic telephone-system tasks and maintenance, including resetting voicemail passwords, adding and deleting voicemail boxes, and enabling or disabling telephone features. You are responsible for all calls made through your multiline telephone system.

Anyone wishing to use Relay North Carolina simply dials 711 to connect with a Relay Operator. The statewide 711 telephone relay number connects standard voice-telephone users with people who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, or speech-disabled and use text telephones (TTYs).
The Relay Operator dials the requested number and relays the conversation between the two callers. This provides easier access for less-experienced relay users, including businesses, children, friends, and family members of TTY users.
People attempting to place relay calls from an office or large telephone system using 711 may occasionally experience difficulty if the number has not been programmed into the system. Contact your office administrator or local telephone-service provider to ensure that 711 service is available.
Standard telephone users can easily initiate calls to TTY users. The Relay Operator types the standard telephone user’s spoken words to the TTY user. The person who is deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, or speech-disabled types a response using a TTY, and the Relay Operator reads the response aloud to the standard telephone user.

Video Relay Services (VRS)
Video Relay Service (VRS) is a communication solution for American Sign Language (ASL) users. VRS allows natural telephone communication between ASL users and standard telephone users. Communication flows through a qualified video interpreter using a desktop or laptop computer with video-conferencing capability.
After connecting to www.sorensonvrs.com or www.purplevrs.com , the ASL user signs to the interpreter, who voices the message to the other party. Emotions and facial expressions are conveyed by video, allowing both parties to participate fully. VRS allows natural conversation in which either caller can interrupt, and no typing is required.
For more information about Video Relay Service, visit www.ncdhhs.gov , call 910-251-5743, or call 1-800-422-1884.
