Chowan County Student Awarded Scholarship through the Foundation for Rural Service's National Scholarship Program
Chowan County, NC –Jamaurie Perry, a senior at John A Holmes High School, has been awarded a competitive $1,000 scholarship from the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS). FRS is a national organization dedicated to supporting rural telecommunication providers, like FOCUS Broadband, and the communities they serve through educational and philanthropic initiatives.
Jamaurie received the $1,000 Roger Alan Cox Scholarship, established in 2017 by FRS and sponsored by Herman & Whiteaker, LLC. This scholarship honors Roger Cox, a former FOCUS Broadband CEO, who spent more than 25 years advocating for rural broadband and was passionate about ensuring that students in rural communities had the same access to education and opportunities as their urban peers. Jamaurie plans to attend Elizabeth City State University this fall, where he will pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering.
“We’re proud to see Jamaurie recognized for his hard work and we know he will excel in this next chapter of his life,” said Keith Holden, CEO of FOCUS Broadband. “Roger Cox firmly believed in the power of education, and we’re thankful that FRS and Herman & Whiteaker continue to honor his legacy by supporting students in rural communities.”
The FRS Scholarship Program is open to students across rural America and awards scholarships to students entering their first year of college, university or vocational-technical school. This year, more than 2,000 students from rural areas across the United States applied for an FRS scholarship, with only 50 students selected nationwide.
