Brunswick County, NC – FOCUS Broadband announced today that work has begun on an expansion project that will enable over 1,700 homes and businesses along the beachfront area on Oak Island to receive FOCUS fiber optic broadband. The project, which is expected to be complete by the end of 2022, will make Gigabit internet speeds, as well as digital cable TV, home telephone, and security with smart home solutions, available to residents living on the western end of the island.
In 2019, FOCUS Broadband completed a project that brought fiber optics to a majority of Oak Island and Caswell Beach, but a section along the beachfront area was not included. As FOCUS Broadband pushes to provide more Brunswick County residents with FOCUS fiber optics, the company will bring its services to the remaining addresses between SE 40th Street and Kings Lynn Drive along the beachfront.
Fiber optic technology provides a faster connection to the internet than what can be delivered via cable modem-delivered internet services and is less susceptible to damage caused by the rust and corrosion which is common on barrier islands like Oak Island. By using fiber optic lines to deliver services, FOCUS Broadband will be able to provide Oak Island residents and businesses the fastest and most reliable Internet service on the island.
Work will be completed in phases and residents will be notified when service becomes available at their address. Those interested in FOCUS Broadband’s efforts to bring fiber optics to the remaining beachfront areas of Oak Island can stay up to date on the progress of this project by visiting www.iwantfocusbroadband.com or calling FOCUS Broadband at 910-754-4311.
FOCUS Broadband is also set to begin a multi-year, $100 million dollar project this month to convert all of its cooperative members to its FOCUS fiber optic network. By starting in the most densely populated portions of its service area first, the company estimates that it will have the majority of its members converted to fiber optics within the first 60 months of the project. This project comes as it finishes up a two-year project to bring FOCUS fiber optics to the town of Boiling Spring Lakes.
